Actively partners with technical and commercial leadership to influence business strategy and priorities, to create sustainable value creation options for the business, to extract value from IP and to align IC activities with business strategy. Serves as the focal point for all IC issues in their area of responsibility.
In this role, you will require in-depth conceptual and working knowledge of your discipline or functional area. You will need to understand your discipline's best practices and how they relate to others. You may need to lead small projects with manageable risks and resource requirements as well as serve as a resource for less experienced colleagues. You should also be able to explain difficult or sensitive information and work to build consensus with others.
It is your responsibility to analyze and resolve complex problems, examine information from multiple sources, and use judgement to evaluate established and new solutions. Your performance impacts a range of customer, operational, project, or service activities within your own team and other related teams and requires that you work within established guidelines and policies.Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement business-aligned IC strategies for the ICMT.
  • Influence business strategy & investment choices by creating and sharing relevant IC-based knowledge, (e.g. IP landscapes of pertinent new markets, geographies, competitors, customers, etc). Partner with marketing and technical leaders/SMEs to identify and shape new business and/or IP opportunities through understanding emerging technology, industry trends, and IP.
  • Integrate IP planning and strategy into the early stages of projects and ensure that these plans are followed through commercialization.
  • Manage and grow an IC portfolio that can provide options for sustainable value creation. Drive obtention of strategic patent rights through timely & strategic filings, in-licensing/purchasing, negotiation, JDAs, etc.
  • Ensure & drive value extraction priorities, plans and metrics for each segment.
  • Partner with IC Tech to ensure that all minimum requirements are met including timely inventions processing, communication of country filing plans, agreement contacts, reporting metrics, initiating watches/oppositions, etc.
  • Create a robust IC culture for the segment, ensuring that leaders & members are aware of IC strategy, IP positions, tools and their roles/responsibilities for creating, defending, managing, enforcing and monetizing IP.
  • Develop and document IC best practice.
Qualifications
  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or other Engineering discipline is a minimum requirement.
  • Candidate should have 5-15 years of R&D experience, as well as prior participation in multifunctional teams (e.g. market management teams, value center teams, or technology development/launch teams).
  • Though it may not be extensive, the candidate should also have some relevant experience with intellectual capital matters. For example, the candidate may have experienced one or more of the following- developing invention disclosures, working with attorneys to draft patent applications, assessing prior art for disclosure development or white space identification, serving as a subject matter expert for opposition preparation or participating in the development of joint development or licensing agreements. Prior experience with Thomson Innovation tools is desirable.
