Assistant Manager, Power Trading

= Objective =
Seeking an experienced Power Trader to manage BASF sites' power demand in China power wholesale markets (Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai). Proactively mitigate trading risks and capture opportunities within regulatory frameworks. Optimize trading activities for cost efficiency and value creation while adapting to evolving policy dynamics.= Main Tasks =
1. Power Trading and Risk Management
  • Identify trading opportunities in the market, trade in spot, Mid-to-Long term, and forwards/derivatives markets (when applicable)within BASF's authorized risk framework.
  • Monitor market fundamentals (supply/demand, grid constraints, policy shifts) to identify optimization opportunities.
  • Develop tools and processes by seeking for continuous improvement.
  • Implement real-time analysis and reporting for the purpose of trading review and optimization
2. Portfolio Optimization
  • Manage BASF operational sites' exposure to power prices across target markets.
  • Execute PPA optimization/hedging strategies to secure cost-competitive energy for BASF operational sites.
3. Market Analysis & Modeling
  • Develop price forecasts model by making use of fundamental analysis, statistical models, and tools.
  • Analyze regional basis differentials and grid dynamics (e.g., Guangdong/Jiangsu/Shanghai markets).
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Site Operations teams to make sure the alignment between trading strategies and operational needs.
  • Coordinate with Risk, Finance, and Accounting to ensure compliance and transparent P&L reporting.
  • Work closely with external third-party trading service providers to monitor algorithms/strategies, execute day-to-day trades and implement structured solutions.
5. Sustainablity Integration
  • Support decarbonization goals through trading of Green Power/Green Certificate and other renewable energy solutions
= Job Requirements =
  • Bachelor degree or above with a focus in Energy, Chemistry, Engineering, Business, Finance, or Mathematics.
  • At least 3 years trading experience in Chinese power markets, with proven success in spot market provinces (Guangdong/Shandong/Shanxi). Proficiency in the use of trading platforms.
  • Mastery of Python/VBA/others for data analysis/modeling, deep knowledge of regional grid structures, LMP mechanisms, and policy landscapes. Understand fundamental price drivers.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to manage relationships with internal partners.
  • Commodities trading experience (including renewables) is an advantage.
  • Chinese native speaker and business level of oral & written English
  • Analytical, highly motivated with ability to work on own initiative.
  • Position requires flexibility in work hours and days due to market requirements
