- Manage the provision of general legal, transactional, and regulatory advice to the business leadership teams in this region.
- Manage day-to-day legal issues in the organisation's business across the Greater China region.
- Serve as trusted adviser and resource on various legal matters.
- Drive functional projects and improvement initiatives aligned to the legal team and the organisation's business objectives.
- Lead, motivate, and manage the junior members of the team, including the monitoring of colleague wellbeing and progress against inclusion and diversity objectives.
- Undertake and oversee effective engagement with the organisation’s business clients, government regulators, vendors, outside lawyers, trade bodies and other parties.
- Manage legal issues effectively and efficiently in line with the organisation's objectives, values and risk appetites.
- Manage outside legal and other spend in accordance with the legal team's budgeted spend and Outside Counsel Guidelines.
- Work with the broader global legal teams as a high-functioning and collaborative group.
- Manage the effective use of available management information together with efficient and timely upwards reporting of all key issues and recommendations to the Head of Legal – Asia Pacific, including all matters which must be escalated for external and internal board, committee, and other reporting purposes.
- Demonstrated track record as a senior lawyer (PQE 8+ years) across private practice and/or in-house. Valid China, England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and/or US bar qualification.
- Proficiency in speaking, drafting and providing legal advice in English and Mandarin is required.
- Solid track record of handling complex and sophisticated legal matters in an efficient and commercially-friendly manner, including investigations.
- Knowledge and experience in financial services laws and regulations. Experience in insurance broking is strongly preferred.
- Experience in advising professional services businesses is preferred.
- Experience in giving legal advice to businesses across jurisdictions within the Greater China region is required.
- Ability to work closely with and influence all levels of senior management and provide strategic legal advice.
- Ability to handle confidential information and opinions with discretion. Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
- Ability to see the big picture in terms of the organisation’s legal and ethical obligations for the protection of its reputation.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in managing professionals is preferred. Respected for substantive expertise and work ethic, able to inspire others as a role model.
- Experience in managing legal matters effectively and in a manner that upholds the organisation’s reputation for integrity.
- Ability to support legal and compliance aspects of M&A (including due diligence), and to identify potential issues.
- Ability to evaluate and advise on the impact of regulatory changes and to support the organisation’s businesses and functions in addressing those changes.
- Innovative thinker and established hands-on lawyer, with a record of diligent and active involvement in projects.
