- Serve as the university’s lead case manager for high-risk, high-need, or complex student situations, providing direct outreach and support to students navigating medical, psychological, academic, behavioral, or personal challenges.
- Coordinate a comprehensive and collaborative system of care with key campus stakeholders including Health and Wellness, Academic Affairs, Residential Life, Financial Aid, the Moses Center for Student Accessibility, and Public Safety.
- Lead re-entry planning and structured follow-up support for students returning from voluntary or involuntary leave of absence.
- Ensure accurate documentation, consistent protocols, and appropriate use of student support systems in alignment with university policy and global best practices.
- Student Affairs consist of 9 functional areas, this role will be responsible for supervision of 3-4 Student Affairs functional units which may rotate periodically to give the Assistant Dean a larger understanding of student affairs as a whole.
- Chair the Student Success Committee, coordinating early alerts and academic advisor/faculty referrals for at-risk students.
- Foster campus-wide collaboration on student engagement, academic progress, and holistic advising efforts.
- Act as a primary institutional responder to student-related emergencies and crisis situations during working hours, and coordinate after-hours response planning with the Assistant Vice Chancellor.
- Co-lead the university’s behavioral intervention team and chair case review meetings where student safety, self-harm, or threats to others are present.
- Collaborate with campus partners to assess and manage threats of violence or disruption, including timely use of standardized behavioral risk assessment tools.
- Lead the development and training of response protocols for critical incidents, and coordinate communication with families and emergency contacts when appropriate.
- Develop and maintain institutional policies and procedures related to student case management, leave of absence, behavioral intervention, and student conduct.
- Provide expert consultation to faculty and staff on managing student distress, concerning behavior, and classroom or community disruptions.
- Lead staff training efforts around FERPA, trauma-informed care, threat assessment, and early intervention best practices.
- Represent Student Affairs on university-wide initiatives and compliance efforts related to wellness and safety.
- Serve as NYU Shanghai’s liaison to the NYU Office of Equal Opportunity regarding Title IX processes and student cases.
- Serve as a key member of the Sexual Respect Committee, contributing to prevention education, culture change initiatives, and community engagement efforts.
- Support institutional data collection and trend analysis related to student wellbeing, conduct, and retention to inform policy and program development.
- Collaborate with offices and colleagues across NYU including in NY, Abu Dhabi, and the Global Academic Centers
- Other responsibilities as assigned and necessary to carry out the goals and mission of Student Affairs.
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, social work, student affairs, or a related field required; doctoral degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in student support services, case management, or crisis response roles in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience managing students of concern, supervising professional staff, and leading behavioral intervention efforts.
- Strong knowledge of student development theory, legal and compliance standards (FERPA, Title IX), and mental health risk protocols.
- Excellent judgment, intercultural communication skills, and the ability to work in high-stakes, high-pressure environments with discretion and care.
- Demonstrated advanced competencies in Analytical Thinking, Decision Making, Progressive Thinking, Execution, Operation and Management, Agility, Openness and Self Awareness, Communication, Cooperation, People and Team Building, and Duo Feasibility. These competencies will be explored during the interview process.
