Title: Illusion Maker, Surface DevelopmentDepartment: Walt Disney Imagineering, Show Systems Studio, AnimatronicsReports To: Animatronics Studio Manager / Show Studio ExecutiveGENERAL INTRODUCTION:Walt Disney Imagineering is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of Disney’s Parks and Resorts business segment. Representing more than 150 disciplines, its talented teams of Imagineers are responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation and commissioning - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media projects.The Show Systems team helps to dream and create many of the magical moments that our guests enjoy. Our team is responsible for delivering world class Audio-Animatronics figures, show action equipment and special effects through their full lifecycle. We partner with various disciplines to help deliver quality products and our processes and tools help to take us from concept design to production and installation.Animation Production is responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning of highly prototypical and cutting-edge Show Systems. Technicians are often called upon to support complex mock-ups in multiple sites and to participate in installations for new or renovated attractions. These are hands-on technical positions that demand advanced training in various trades.GENERAL ROLE DESCRIPTION:Perform plastics fabrication and assembly tasks related to Show mechanical systems (Audio-Animatronics figures, show action equipment, etc.) where durability, long life, reliability and safety are a must.Function within a team performing various fabrication tasks: develop production strategies, produce and integrate plastics with complex prototypical mechanical systems, ensure quality control, and stay current with Industry Standards and advancing technology.CORE FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide input to the digital design of 3D printed shells for complicated Audio-Animatronics figures
  • Provide input to the digital design of 3D printed tooling for complicated Audio-Animatronics figure parts
  • Fabrication, assembly, and clean-up of 3D printed parts
  • Fabrication, assembly, and clean-up of fiberglass parts
  • Fabrication, assembly, and clean-up of cast parts
  • Fabrication, assembly, and clean-up of vacuum form parts
  • Fabrication and clean-up of silicone skins
  • Troubleshoot, test, evaluate, and modify Audio-Animatronics figure shells, parts, skins, and tooling as required
  • Design and fabricate plastic parts for longevity and with considerations for maintenance
  • Diagnose issues, mock-up and test solutions for complex plastic part issues
  • Document and archive shell, skin, and tooling digital files per project requirements
  • Coordinate with the Figure Finishing, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to ensure that shells and skins are effectively integrated with the overall system
  • Develop Audio-Animatronics figure shells and skins to ensure that they meet the creative intent and overall look of the show
  • Collaborate with Dimensional Design’s digital and physical sculptors to ensure shell clearances, thickness, shapes, offsets, etc., are all considered during the sculpt and model development phase
  • Provide input to tooling, shell, and skin estimates
  • Provide input to Surface Development design and production schedules
  • Adhere to established schedules and budgets
  • Provide input to sourcing and ordering materials
  • Willingness to travel (including internationally) as required
  • Train Disney Parks maintenance teams in the installation, removal, handling, and care of the Audio-Animatronics figure shells, skins, props, etc.
  • Provide input to the development of standards and guidelines related to Surface Development products and deliverables
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Understanding of Design X, Magics and Rhino
  • Knowledge and experience in SolidWorks
  • Strong knowledge of plastic and skin material properties
  • Understanding of how to read and evaluate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and technical data sheets
  • 3D printing experience and knowledge of processes, materials, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other disciplines
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong ability to solve problems and think outside the box
  • Knowledge and experience operating and maintaining 3D printers
  • Knowledge and experience with 3D printed part fabrication
  • Knowledge of fabricating matrix molds (tooling)
  • Knowledge of fabrication epoxy molds (tooling)
  • Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience in plastics, mold and part design and fabrication
EDUCATION:
  • College or trade school degree above or equivalent work experience
