Provision of legal advice in response to business requirements on increasingly complex and/or higher value matters typically with moderate or occasionally significant Sector impact. Initiates and implements some more proactive legal services. In each case within a Sector, region, business or functional team liaising with business clients generally not at the most senior level within the Sector or function. May manage people. Moderate level of oversight by more senior lawyers, decreasing with experience. Works independently within established functional practice. Confirms direction and judgements with more senior colleagues on complex or high value matters or where not seen before.Principal accountabilities
  • Working closely and independently with all business units/Sectors in the China organisation and group stakeholders to support its material day-to-day needs across the risk spectrum utilising China legal resource or external counsel as appropriate. Delivering advice to a high standard, within timeframes required by the business and in a manner that meets commercial needs.
  • Supporting the Head of Legal, China, and the China organisation on implementing the business/function strategy. Shaping future strategic direction for all the business units in the China organisation.
  • Identifying/anticipating risks and opportunities across the China businesses and helping to drive/foster pro-active behaviours and practices.
  • Working independently with the all the China businesses to identify and deliver legal risk mitigation opportunities across but not limited to (i) supply chain, (ii) manufacturing, (iii) quality, (iv) procurement, (v) engineering and (vi) EHS (vii) commerical -- establishing thought and business partnership relationships with each sub-Function. Providing training/guidance to the organisation as appropriate.
  • Providing timely support and advice for all legal and quasi legal matters across each China site – being curious about how they operate, seeing things before they happen and implementing standardised mitigations across all sites as appropriate.
  • Communicating the legal risk profile (and mitigating actions) of each sub-Function and/or site to relevant stakeholders in the business and ensuring these are properly understood and appropriate actions taken.
  • Maintaining a complete record on the legal portal (GLMS) of all legal (and ancillary) documents created for, and/or entered into by or on behalf of, the operations organisation
  • Driving the implementation of key strategic themes developed by the China Leadership team within the assigned organisation.
  • Managing specialist legal services provided by external firms and ensuring value for money is delivered and budgets met.
  • To take on any other duties that are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed by Head of Legal, China.

Qualifications/ knowledge/ experience
  • Qualified Lawyer
  • Significant advisory and commercial experience at junior management level
  • Significant broad commercial and corporate experience gained either in a leading firm or in industry with PQE of 7 years or above
  • Significant experience of negotiating and closing high value transactions
  • Significant experience of managing risk across the spectrum
  • Experience of working in an international environment
  • Experience of working across multiple business units simultaneously
  • Exposure to (high tech) industrial/manufacturing operations
  • Experience of the automotive industry
  • Experience of dealing hands on with compliance matters
  • Experience of working in a matrix organization
  • Experience in the procurement supply chain, manufacturing, quality, procurement, or EHS field
  • Team player with the ability to build strong relationships and trust with a wide range of audiences at all levels of the Business
  • Sufficient confidence and edge to independently deal with difficult situations and deliver agreed outcomes, whilst demonstrating calm in high-pressure situations
  • Resilience to handle high risk, complex and ambiguous matters in short timescales.
  • Ability to bring a pragmatic approach to complex legal issues
  • Self-starter with the confidence and capability to carry out the majority of workload without supervision
